Subcutaneous Injection Instructions

Set your table with the following supplies:

  • 1 Alcohol swab
  • 1 Syringe from the refrigerator
  • Sharps container (empty water bottle, milk/juice carton)

 Injection Technique

  1. At bedtime, wash your hands well with soap and water.
  2. The skin on the lower belly is the easiest place to inject your medication. Clean the area you wish to inject with the alcohol swab. Next, pinch an inch of skin and fatty tissue between your fingers.
  3. Keeping your skin pinched (not too tight), insert the needle into the skin at a 90 degree angle.
  4. After completely inserting the needle, press down on the plunger to inject the medication into the pinched skin.
  5. Keep the needle in your skin for 10 seconds after the medication has been injected. Then release your pinched skin and pull out the needle. NOTE: The next time you inject, rotate sites of injection. Rotate around your belly button like a clock. (Rotating injection sites helps to ensure your medication is absorbed into your body and to reduce skin damage)
  6. Throw away the needle and syringe into your sharps container. **Never recap your needle once it has been used for injection**
  7. Wash your hands again, store your medication syringes in a secure area of the refrigerator.

*Must discard syringes 40 days after receipt *
